WHAT IS MEDICARE?

Medicare is the United States’ federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older. It is also available for certain people younger than 65 with disabilities or people with End-Stage Renal Disease. There are several parts to Medicare that contain different coverage.

Medicare Part A

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B is outpatient medical coverage. Part B helps pay for medically necessary services performed on an outpatient basis that are needed to diagnose and treat a medical condition.

Surgeries, lab work, and preventative services are all covered under Part B.

Medicare Part C?

Medicare Part C is also called Medicare Advantage (MA). It’s an alternative benefit from Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage may include prescription drug coverage, along with other extra benefits. It is offered through private insurance companies, so you don’t enroll in it at the Social Security office or website.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is also known as prescription drug coverage. Part D coverage is available as a Stand Alone Option (PDP) or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted and approved by Medicare.

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS – MEDIGAP

Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, are policies that help pay for the excess charges left over by Medicare. These costs are things like your deductibles and coinsurance.

What is Medicare Supplemental Insurance?

Medicare Supplement plans, or Medigap, are insurance policies sold by private insurance companies that are licensed to sell Medicare plans. They help you pay for out-of-pocket costs for services covered under Medicare Part A and Part B. These costs include deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, hospital costs after Medicare pays its share, skilled nursing facility costs, and more. Some Medicare Supplement insurance plans even include coverage for medical services while traveling outside the United States.

Medigap plans

Different Medicare Supplement plans are labeled with a different letters between A through N.

Medicare Supplements feature different benefits. However, each plan must have the same standardized coverage no matter which insurance company you purchase the plan from.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE – PART C

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is a plan provided by insurance companies contracted by Medicare to fulfill the basic coverage of Original Medicare but with additional benefits.

These additional benefits can sometimes be provided at no additional cost to you. This is possible because Medicare actually pays the insurance company a set amount for providing your healthcare coverage.

MEDICARE PART D

Medicare Part D is Medicare’s prescription drug benefit that provides outpatient drug coverage. Part D is provided through private insurance companies contracted with the federal government.

If you want Part D coverage, you have to either buy a standalone plan or get it through a Medicare Advantage plan.
